The staff was very disorganized and viewed the backpackers as a form of revenue and rather than guests. Rent was way to expensive for the living environment you are provided. All you get is a hot plate, and the outlets don't even work. The manager tried to trick us a few times by telling us the farm we were working at didn't need us anymore, and when we would try to confirm this on the farm, they hasn't heard anything about that. He just wanted to switch us to a lower paying job. We were ripped off at the end of our stay, being told we owed money for transportation. Turns out they had been making accounting errors, and to make up for they're mistake they withheld our $200 deposit. We paid for their mistakes and disorganization. Would not recommend staying here.
Do not stay at this backpackers, the owners will take your money use you and spit you out to the curb without notice. have you ever wondered how a partner sticks up for their deceitful husband in politics. Because they are both the same type of people. Yes Mal the owner was a politician He doesn't care about you he doesn't even like you. I can assure you the people who own this hostel do not care about you the backpacker, your mental health the living conditions or the way they treat you or the unfair working conditions. You come you go and next please is all they are saying. They will promise you the world and then tell you they didnt say anything of the kind. They will manipulate the situation to make you look like the idiot they will lie and do lie to your face. The owners are racist they do not like backpackers and should not be in the business. At the end of the day the owners are working for the farmers, The farmers will pay you pittance and make you work in harsh conditions. The owners will say, you should let us know if you are being treated harshly at the farms. Sue and Mal know very well how the farmers treat the back packers and they will not stick up for the backpacker, ever. I would really re consider staying at this hostel. The kitchens are not kitchens and should be illegal, a portable hot plate that trips everything out. 2 small hot plates between 6 people. Your rooms are not air conditioned and look nothing like the photos. They are hot in summer and cold in winter. Farmgate backpackers are here for one reason, to take advantage of vulnerable back packers. I can also assure you the 5 star reviews left here are Sue and Mals friends, including their daughter. I am afraid these people are more concerned about how they can continue to take advantage of vulnerable people. being honest business people and good to backpackers is not in their blood. The owners and managers dont actually care about you staying with them. They care about themselves that's it. They will also respond to me and say we dont know who you are I am a scam. However, everyone to Sue and Mal telling the truth are a scam. It's a very political set up Sue and Mal dictate to their staff how and when to do things, how to treat people, just like little puppets. Whilst they sit at home out of site not to be seen, collecting the money and telling people they actually care about them. shame on both of you. cant believe you responded in such a way that it doesn't even correlate to the appropriate or person in question. you dont rven think about what is really going on. your deceitful business owners and you will do anything to cover yourselves you do not care about people
Fake reviews left by staff. The place was straight out of the 3rd world. Workers treated awfully. After speaking with the Fair Work Ombudsman, we were able to determine that Farmgate Backpackers practise is unethical and immoral. We worked to hard to earn minimum wage, were treated as slaves, forced to work in +35C weather all day, without breaks. When we asked for more water after 2 hours of work, we were denied, until some of us were on the verge of passing out. As far as the accommodation goes, even if it was free, you'd be paying to much. "in suite kitchen" means a hot plate that doesn't work, and a mildew filled fridge. "Air Conditioned rooms" means a fan that blows hot air around. "Private bathroom" means a disgusting shared bathroom. You are asked to put down a $200 bond that won't be refunded if you leave early, even if you behave and abide by the rules. Some people that I spoke to were effectively stuck there. Making just enough money to continue living there, but not making enough to leave. Massive waste of money, time, and mental health. I hate writing reviews, but as I feel a strong need to warn people of this place, I've created an anonymous account to tell people to stay away. I love Australia, but if this is how workers are treated, I won't be coming back.ALSO: If you noticed, most of the bad reviews left by people are replied to with a comment saying "We have no record of *blank* staying with us"
it is one of the better working hostels but still you have to pay a high rent. The community there was awesome and made the life much easier.
DO NOT COME HERE. WATCH OUT FOR FAKE 5 STAR REVIEWS BY THE STAFF AND OWNERS. This "hostel" is a SCAM and a trap that prays on desperate and vunerable backpackers. The hostel is associated with non ethical farms that pay less than half of the minimum wage. The staff at farmgate, particularly "Mal" the owner are patronising, rude, condescending and extremely deceptive. Lies are told to new arrivals about potential earnings from piece rate and hours available. Hours provided are limited and piece rates are simply impossible to even achieve close to minimum wage, do not think you can save any money staying here. The rent prices are absurd 170 dollars per week, per person to sleep in a car or pitch a tent on a parking space. The camp kitchen is old, the toilets are filthy. Do not come to this hostel if you want to drink or have any fun as this is completely banned, any sort of gathering even on weekends is banned and will result in eviction and loss of the 100 dollar bond. A 7 day 100 dollar bond notice bond is given on arrival, a massive warning sign of what's to come. Essentially trapping backpackers further. Please take this warning and avoid this place at all costs. **** - In response to the reply given to the "British boys" and the false five star review that came with it. (Are hostels really allowed to rate themselves five star? Maybe this in itself can raise some questions about the overall rating of this hostel?). The mere fact that the owners continue to try and justify various misleading comments is astounding. The worker described in this review/response as earning 450 dollars per day is a worker who has been at the farm 5 years and arrives every day with his arms wrapped in towels to avoid the inch long thorns in the trees. This is the standard to which is used to tempt and mislead backpackers. The fact that the owners still try to spin this shows the lack of conscience and morality they display towards young people. The reality is, no backpackers last long on this job because it simply is underpaid and the rate in which a single person would have to improve in order to even earn minimum wage is astounding, basic maths can be used to work this out. The wage is completely unsustainable whether you "stick it out or not". The work itself is not particulary bad or hard and the hours are short in comparison to most farmwork, a normal working day of 9-5. Furthermore campgrounds around Australia manage to charge around $10 p/p whilst providing similar or better facilities, they also don't use a $100 dollar bond system.
